Musings

Traveling to places we have been before has made this a relaxing trip.
We haven’t been concerned with trying to see as much as possible
because we’ve already seen much of it.

On our last cruise to SA we had overnights at Callao (Lima),
Valparaiso (Santiago), Buenos Aires, and Rio and I think they were
all 3 nights except Valpo. We only had a short time in Lima an
Buenos Aires because of the overland trips we took. We got our
city tour in BA this trip, but we’ll have to skip it in Lima because
there are “bandit” warnings. We’ve been advised
to travel only in groups, so I think I will just stay put.

Valparaiso 2002

We were greeted at Valparaiso by a folk singing/dancing group.
This port is a marked improvement to previous ports. Valpo is a lovely
city built on a hillside. I told our guide some of the streets looked like
Ski slopes.

We had a nice tour of Valpo & Vinna del Mar, a resort area on the coast.
We drove along the coast and the scenery was beautiful. Beautiful old
homes mingled with new high rises. The Place we stopped for photos
reminded me a little of the drive along the coast outside of Honolulu.

We walked into Valpo during the afternoon and walked thru the streets &
came to a lovely pedestrian area & park.

Because we remembered how pretty the area was, we had planned to
get off ship today and take a taxi with our table mates to see it agai
but it is foggy and cold, so we stayed on ship.

We did not have any dancers this time. We are docked in a commercial
area and have to be bused to terminal.

Santiago 2002

Today we had an all day trip to Santiago-about a 2 hour drive.
We had a nice drive over the mountains and thru the wine
area. Santiago is a modern thriving city. Because this Is a
earthquake prone area there are no skyscrapers, but lots
of “high rises.”

We rode up San Cristof Mt. (about 300M up) along a winding road.
Trees & plants had been brought in & planted & it was a lovely area-
quite different from natural growth usually seen. At the top was a
statue of the Virgin Mary. We had a delicious lunch at a restaurant
near the top of mt.

Puerto Montt 2002

Today we had a half day tour of Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas
(city of roses) which lived up to its name and Fruitillar, a
summer resort settled by Germans & containing lots of buildings
that looked like they belonged in the Alps.

We saw one of Chili’s many lakes and hoped to see the Orsorno
volcano but weather didn’t cooperate.

We visited the museum of Frutillar which was a lot of houses
furnished in what looked like early 20th century.

Otway Bay Penguin Preserve 2002

Otway Bay again

Punta Arenas 2002

Today I remembered again why we moved to Florida. I had on 4 layers
& could have used more. I forgot to take my gloves which were in my
windbreaker.  As we rode to Otway Bay Penguin Colony, I noticed trees
were leaning in the same direction. Along the way we stopped to look at
some wild protected birds similar to Ostrich. Their color blended in so
well with their surroundings they were difficult to see at first.

Well, at the Penguin Colony we were almost blown away. If we had been
home, we would have had our hurricane shutters down. I would like to
know how high the wind was blowing. It was enough to make walking
difficult. It was a lengthy walking distance out to the colony, but well
worth it. There were hundreds of penguins walking around. They are
used to people & Sometimes almost seemed to pose. I was quite near
some one time & stopped to take a picture. When I turned to walk on,
I think I almost stepped on one which had apparently crossed the path
behind me. If got a picture of it going into it’s burrow.

Ushuaia

In 2002 I got off the ship in Ushuaia to get a T-shirt but Foster did
not leave ship. This year we decided to take the southernmost
Railway. It was a nice ride into Tierra del Fuego National Park. The
train was different. It had private carriages that only opened outside,
no aisle. The railway used to transport prisoners to work and probably
the carriages were made like that.

We were supposed to dock but for some reason, the Argentines would
not allow us to. Since we couldn’t stop at Falklands, that’s not the
reason I just think they don’t like us. Anyway, we had to anchor and
use tenders. They only allowed us one drop off point and things moved
slowly. When we left for our tour, there was a line waiting to board and
we Thought it would be less when we returned. Instead it had got much
longer. We had to stand in the cold and occasional sprinkles about
1 ½ hours. Even with 3-4 layers top and 2 lower, it was cold. I had left
my rain pants and was annoyed at myself. The average “summer”
temperature is 55 degrees F, way too cold for me. It felt much colder
yesterday. The ship's crew delivered beach towels to give us a little
more cover. Definitely a day to remember

Today we had no trouble seeing Cape Horn, but this time I was
Confused about exactly where it was. There were lots of mountains.
I hope I chose the right one. It was cold but not rocky (Phooey!)

Cape Horn 2002

Well, we passed by Cape Horn this morning. At least we were told
we were passing it. It was so cloudy and we could not go too close
and could barely decipher a few ridges.

Choppy seas in the South Atlantic

At Sea not at Stanley

When the captain came on the speaker about 6:00 PM, we knew what
was coming. We were not surprised but disappointed that we cannot
stop at the Falklands. Seas are too choppy and wind is too high for
tendering. I don’t know and it’s a moot point, but if we could have
docked we might have been able to stop. Anyone who has ever
taken a tender from a ship knows that even in good sea conditions
the tenders move around a bit. In rough conditions they are just too
dangerous. I am always pleased to know that Princess always puts
passenger safety first.

This is a day when I wish we had an outside cabin on Plaza deck. Not a
balcony-too cold, too windy, too high (can’t see the waves nearly
as well). View from balcony is not nearly as good as view from window
on lower deck.

So we are now on an unscheduled sea day rocking and rolling
Other than when a big wave bounces us around most people take
it in stride. Many passengers have taken world cruises and most
have cruised a lot more than we have.

On the first segment the most traveled passengers had over 1200 days.
The second and third place had over 900 days. Foster thought he heard
Sammi say she was an event where everyone had over 900 days. We
think it was the top 20/40 days traveled passengers. We’ll never reach
that level. The only chance we have to make the top 20/40 would be
a short cruise in the Caribbean. All the long time travelers would not
be showing up on the same 1-2 weeker.

Puerto Madryn 2013

We are in Puerto Madryn (port for Punta Tombo) today and what
a difference in temperature in two days. It is in the fifties and very
breezy.

Hours later

We walked into town and again a big change in temperature from
the ship to the town. The breeze disappeared and the sun was shining
and I was having to shed layers. We didn’t see any sea lions, but
hopefully we will at Falkands.

Penguins at Punta Tombo

Below are pictures of penguins we saw in 2002.

Puerto Madryn 2002

Today we had a full day with a trip to the Punta Tombo Penguin
Colony. It was a three hour drive both ways with about 75 minutes
on a dirt road but you would never have thought it because our
driver put the pedal to the metal.

The penguins were fantastic Weather warm and very nice.
There were thousands of them and they just walked (waddled)
up to you. Our dining mate got a picture “talking” with one. We
spent about an hour walking amongst them. They estimate
500,000 to 1,000,000 come there in summer. Many had already
left for the season.

We chose the Penguin tour in lieu of the sea lion tour. But we did
see some on the steps of the dock, 1 large and 2 juvenile. They were
resting on the steps

Friday we were in Montevideo, Uruguay.

It was a really good day once it got started. We were supposed to
arrive at 8:00 AM and were an hour late leaving BA and then had
headwind and water flow that further slowed us down, so we did
not get in until after 10:00.

We did a tour combining two of our favorites, a train ride and a
wine tour. The steam train we rode is one of only four worldwide
like it. The two passenger cars were very nice. We found out that
the train only runs on special occasions such as holidays, when
dignitaries visit and when Princess Cruises is in town.

We were really on an exclusive train.

I apologize for getting the Iguassu Falls pictures out of order.
When you're concerned about time on internet, things get

Iguassu Falls Pictures Part 1

I am often asked what the favorite place I have visited is.
I always answer Iguassu Falls. It cannot be adequately
described and is one of those places you must see
to understand how  beautiful and spectacular it is.

Look closely and you may see a rainbow.

Just another view.

A view through the trees.

See why I can't get enough?

This is a view from our hotel room.
